General work, warehouse and logistics roles keep stock moving from supplier to shelf. They are among the most widely advertised positions in South Africa, and they are also the ones where job titles vary most between employers: a storeman in one company is a warehouse assistant in the next. This hub groups every general work, warehouse and logistics role covered on Duties.co.za so you can find the guide that matches the work rather than the label.
Each role links to a dedicated page with full duties, daily tasks and CV wording. Use this page to route yourself to the right guide, then read the detail there. For the framework behind all workplace roles, see the parent job duties guide.
Browse General Work, Warehouse & Logistics Job Duties by Role
Browse by the part of the supply chain you work in. Most roles below appear under several different titles in job adverts.
General Work and Site Assistance
General worker roles are deliberately broad. The duties are set by the site rather than by a fixed job description, which makes a clear written scope unusually important.
- General Worker duties and responsibilities
- General Assistant duties and responsibilities
- EPWP General Worker duties and responsibilities
- School General Assistant duties and responsibilities
Warehouse and Stores
Warehouse roles are accountable for stock accuracy as much as for physical handling. The difference between an assistant, a controller and a supervisor is who carries the variance.
- Warehouse Assistant duties and responsibilities
- Warehouse Supervisor duties and responsibilities
- Stock Controller duties and responsibilities
- Warehouse duties and responsibilities
- Warehouse Manager duties and responsibilities
- Warehouse Operator duties and responsibilities
- Storeman duties and responsibilities
- Inventory Controller duties and responsibilities
Picking, Packing and Dispatch
These roles are measured on speed and accuracy together. Duties normally include a documented check before an order leaves the building.
- Packer duties and responsibilities
- Picker Packer duties and responsibilities
- Picker duties and responsibilities
- Picker and Packer duties and responsibilities
- Shelf Packer duties and responsibilities
- Till Packer duties and responsibilities
Driving, Transport and Fleet

Common Duties Across General Work, Warehouse & Logistics Roles
Job titles differ, but nearly every role in this cluster is built from the same accountabilities.
- Accurate handling: receiving, moving, picking or loading the correct stock in the correct quantity against a document.
- Stock accuracy: counting, cycle counting and reporting discrepancies instead of adjusting quietly.
- Documentation: completing delivery notes, waybills, job cards, pick slips and returns paperwork correctly.
- Safe manual handling: lifting, stacking and using equipment within trained limits and reporting damage.
- Housekeeping: keeping aisles, bays and loading areas clear, clean and safe throughout the shift.
- Shift discipline: timekeeping, handover and following the pick, load or delivery sequence set by the supervisor.
How Duties Change by Seniority and Workplace
Seniority Moves You From Task to Variance
A warehouse assistant executes the pick. A stock controller answers for whether the system quantity matches the shelf. A warehouse manager answers for stock loss, staffing and cost across the whole facility. The physical work looks similar from the outside; the accountability does not.
Licence and Equipment Set the Scope
Driving and materials-handling duties are limited by what you are licensed and trained to operate. A Code 10 licence, a Code 14 licence and a forklift operator certificate each unlock different work, and an employer may not lawfully require you to operate equipment you are not certificated for.
Sector Changes the Controls
Cold chain, pharmaceutical and food warehousing add temperature logging, batch traceability and hygiene duties that general goods warehousing does not. Retail distribution centres add shrinkage controls. Read the role guide alongside the procedures used at your site.
Popular Role Guides
- General Worker duties and responsibilities: the broadest entry-level role, covering loading, cleaning, assisting and basic site tasks.
- Driver duties and responsibilities: vehicle checks, route adherence, delivery documentation and customer handover.
- Stock Controller duties and responsibilities: stock accuracy, cycle counts, variance investigation and reporting.
- Warehouse Supervisor duties and responsibilities: shift planning, team allocation, safety and dispatch accuracy.
- Forklift Driver duties and responsibilities: licensed materials handling, pre-use inspection and safe stacking.
Duties for CVs
Warehouse and driving CVs are read for volume, licences and accuracy. Give numbers: units picked, deliveries per day, licence codes held. Use the duties for a CV guide for the method, then adapt wording like this.
- Picked and packed an average of 240 order lines per shift with a 99.6% accuracy rate on scanned checks.
- Completed 18 to 22 deliveries a day on a Code 10 licence, including proof of delivery and cash-on-delivery reconciliation.
- Conducted weekly cycle counts across 1 400 stock keeping units and investigated variances before month-end close.
- Operated a counterbalance forklift under a valid operator certificate, completing daily pre-use inspections.
Job Description and Employer Guidance
General worker and warehouse job descriptions are the ones most often written too loosely. Because the role is broad by design, employers should still state the physical requirements, the shift pattern, the equipment the employee will be trained and certificated to use, and the boundary of “other duties as assigned”. Without that boundary, disputes about extra duties are common.
Use the job description duties and responsibilities guide for structure, then take the role content from the pages above. Duties vary by employer and site.

How to Use These Duties Guides
Find your area above and read the role page in full. If your title is not listed, choose the closest role by the work you actually do. Titles in this cluster are especially interchangeable, so match on duties, equipment and accountability rather than on wording.
Duties vary by employer, site and sector. Where a role requires a licence, permit or operator certificate, that requirement takes precedence over any general duty list.
