A security supervisor runs a shift of security officers on a site: allocating posts, checking that patrols and access control are actually being done, responding to incidents and reporting to the site or contract manager.

This guide sets out security supervisor duties and responsibilities, the shift routine and how the role changes by site. It sits in the Security and safety duties and responsibilities cluster, part of the wider job duties guide.

What Does a Security Supervisor Do?

A security supervisor is accountable for the security of a site during their shift. They brief and post officers, verify that patrols and registers are completed honestly, respond to alarms and incidents, manage the handover, and write the shift report the client and the employer rely on.

The core problem the role exists to solve is verification. Security work is easy to fake: a patrol not walked, a register filled in at the end of the shift, a gate left unmanned. A supervisor who does unannounced checks and records what they find is the difference between a functioning contract and one that fails the first time it is tested.

In South Africa both the supervisor and the officers they oversee must be registered with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority, and the supervisor is usually expected to check that registrations remain valid.

Frequently Asked Questions About Security Supervisor Duties

What are the duties of a security supervisor?

Briefing and posting officers, checking attendance, equipment and registration, conducting unannounced patrol and post checks, verifying registers and occurrence books, responding to incidents, managing access control, investigating and reporting incidents, liaising with the client and SAPS, managing rosters and completing shift reports.

What PSIRA grade does a security supervisor need?

Supervisory posts commonly require Grade B or higher, with grade requirements set by the employer and the contract. Registration with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority must be current. Confirm the requirement with PSIRA and the employer.

Can a security supervisor arrest someone?

Private security personnel rely on the powers of arrest available to a private person under the Criminal Procedure Act, which are narrower than police powers and carry real legal risk if exceeded. Follow your employer’s procedure and take legal advice on specific situations.

What is the difference between a security supervisor and a site manager?

A supervisor runs a shift and the officers on it. A site or contract manager is accountable for the whole contract across all shifts, including client relationship, staffing levels, budget and compliance.

Duties vary by contract and site. Check your job description and site instructions, and confirm registration requirements with PSIRA.
