An electrical assistant works alongside a qualified electrician, doing the preparation, handling and support work that electrical installation and maintenance require. The role is bounded by law: an assistant does not certify work and does not work on live installations unsupervised.

This guide sets out electrical assistant duties and responsibilities and how the work changes by setting. It is part of the wider job duties guide. It is general career information, not electrical or safety guidance.

What Does an Electrical Assistant Do?

An electrical assistant prepares the work area, pulls and routes cable, installs conduit and trunking, mounts boxes and fittings, fetches and carries materials, and does whatever the electrician needs to keep the installation moving.

The important boundary is certification and live work. In South Africa a certificate of compliance may only be issued by a registered person, and safe isolation, testing and energising are the electrician’s responsibility. An assistant who works beyond that boundary is a danger to themselves and creates liability for the employer.

For most people the role is an apprenticeship in practice: an assistant learns the trade by doing the preparation work, and progresses towards a qualification and trade test.

Electrical assistant job descriptions cover three areas: physical installation work such as conduit, cable and mounting; support work such as materials, tools and site preparation; and safety compliance under the electrician’s supervision. What varies is how much terminating and testing you are allowed to assist with.

Key Electrical Assistant Duties and Responsibilities

Daily Tasks of an Electrical Assistant

Electrical Assistant Skills and Competencies

Electrical Assistant Duties by Workplace or Industry

Construction and New Installations

First-fix conduit and cable work, distribution board installation and second-fix fittings, coordinated with other trades on the building programme.

Industrial and Plant Maintenance

Duties involve motors, control panels, breakdown support and shutdown work, under permit-to-work and lockout systems.

Domestic and Small Commercial

Varied call-outs, fault finding support, geyser and distribution board work, and dealing directly with customers alongside the electrician.

Solar and Backup Power Installations

A growing area in South Africa, with duties around panel mounting, DC cabling, inverter and battery installation support and working at height.

In every setting the assistant’s value is preparation. An electrician whose conduit is run, cable pulled and fittings mounted can complete far more terminations and testing in a day, which is what the installation is actually paid for.

Frequently Asked Questions About Electrical Assistant Duties

What are the duties of an electrical assistant?

Assisting the electrician with installations and repairs, pulling and routing cable, installing conduit trunking and trays, chasing and mounting boxes and fittings, preparing and cleaning the work area, fetching materials, following isolation and lockout procedures, observing safety rules and reporting hazards.

Can an electrical assistant do electrical work alone?

No. Work on electrical installations must be done by or under the supervision of a suitably qualified person, and only a registered person may issue a certificate of compliance. Confirm the requirements with the Department of Employment and Labour.

How do you become an electrician from an assistant position?

Through an apprenticeship or learnership combining theory, typically N-level or NCV subjects, with logged practical experience, followed by a trade test. Many assistants study part-time while working. Confirm the current route with a training provider or the relevant SETA.

What is the difference between an electrical assistant and an apprentice?

An apprentice is formally contracted into a structured programme leading to a trade test. An assistant may be doing similar work without that formal registration, which means the experience does not automatically count towards a qualification.
