Why These CVs Work
Transaction Volume
Cashier work is one of the easiest roles to quantify, and almost nobody does it. Transactions per day, transactions per hour at peak, or the size of the store all tell a manager immediately whether you have worked at their pace.
Till Balancing
A consistent balancing record is the single most relevant thing a cashier can claim, because shortages are the risk the employer is managing. State it plainly if it is true.
Availability Stated Explicitly
Retail runs on evenings, weekends and public holidays, and availability is a genuine screening criterion. Saying so in the summary answers a question the manager would otherwise have to ask.
The First-Job Version Does Not Apologise
It describes family business help and volunteering as real entries with dates and duties, because they are. Employers hiring cashiers expect to train the till; they are selecting on honesty, numeracy and whether you will turn up.
How to Adapt These
- Replace every bracketed placeholder with your own detail.
- Use your real transaction figures, even if they are lower than the examples.
- Name the actual point of sale system if you know it.
- State your genuine availability rather than overpromising and resigning later.
- Add any product knowledge relevant to the store, such as fresh produce or pharmacy front shop.
- Mention loss prevention or cash-handling training if you have completed it.
- Reorder bullets so the ones matching the advert come first.
Common Mistakes on Cashier CVs
- Leaving placeholders in the submitted document.
- Omitting transaction volume, which is easy to state and rarely included.
- Not mentioning your till balancing record.
- Leaving out availability for shifts and weekends.
- Describing customer service in adjectives rather than examples.
- Omitting languages, which matter considerably on a shop floor.
- Failing to mention cash-handling honesty when you have an unblemished record.

FAQs
Can I use this cashier CV example directly?
Use the structure and replace all the content with your own. Store managers see a great many similar applications, and a CV matching a published example word for word stands out for the wrong reason.
What if I have never worked a till?
Use the first-job version. Describe family business help, volunteering, informal trading or any cash handling you have done, with dates and duties. Employers expect to train the till and are selecting on numeracy, honesty and reliability.
Should I include transaction numbers?
Yes, wherever you can estimate them honestly. Transactions per day or per hour at peak tell a manager immediately whether you have worked at their pace, and very few cashier CVs include them.
How important is availability on a cashier CV?
Very. Retail depends on evening, weekend and public holiday cover, and availability is a real screening criterion. State it in your summary, and state it accurately rather than overpromising and resigning within weeks.
Do languages matter for cashier roles?
Considerably. Serving customers in their home language improves the interaction and the store experience, and South African retailers value it. List every language you speak with an honest indication of fluency.
