Management, governance and leadership roles carry a different kind of accountability to the work they oversee. A supervisor is measured on the output of a team rather than their own task list, and a director is measured on decisions taken on behalf of an organisation. This hub groups every management and governance role covered on Duties.co.za so you can find the exact role guide you need, whether you are writing a CV, drafting a job description, or checking what a title is actually expected to deliver.
Each role below links to a dedicated page with full duties, daily tasks and CV wording. This page stays deliberately short on detail and long on routing: use it to choose the right guide, then read the specifics there. For the wider framework that governs all workplace roles, see the parent job duties guide.
Browse Management, Governance & Leadership Job Duties by Role
Management titles are used inconsistently between employers, so it helps to browse by the kind of accountability a role holds rather than by seniority alone. The four groups below cover the roles most often searched for in South Africa.
Frontline Supervision and Team Leadership
These roles run a shift, a floor or a small team. They are accountable for day-to-day execution, attendance, quality and first-line discipline, and they usually still perform some of the work themselves.
- Supervisor duties and responsibilities
- Team Leader duties and responsibilities
- Assistant Manager duties and responsibilities
- Site Supervisor duties and responsibilities
- Floor Manager duties and responsibilities
Departmental, Branch and Store Management
Departmental managers own a budget, a headcount and a set of targets. The duties are broadly consistent across functions, but the technical content changes completely between, for example, a payroll manager and a branch manager.
- Operations Manager duties and responsibilities
- Store Manager duties and responsibilities
- Manager duties and responsibilities
- General Manager duties and responsibilities
- Branch Manager duties and responsibilities
- Financial Manager duties and responsibilities
- HR Manager duties and responsibilities
- Marketing Manager duties and responsibilities
- Account Manager duties and responsibilities
- Operational Manager duties and responsibilities
- Operation Manager duties and responsibilities
Project and Programme Coordination
Coordination roles carry responsibility without direct line authority. They plan, schedule and chase, and they are judged on whether work lands on time and within scope rather than on managing people directly.
- Project Manager duties and responsibilities
- Project Coordinator duties and responsibilities
- Coordinator duties and responsibilities
- Events Coordinator duties and responsibilities
Executive, Director and Governance Roles
Executive and governance duties are the only ones in this cluster that carry statutory weight. Company directors in South Africa have specific duties under the Companies Act, and committee office bearers such as a chairperson or treasurer hold duties set by the organisation’s own constitution. Treat these pages as a starting point and check the governing document or statute that applies to your organisation.
- CEO duties and responsibilities
- Managing Director duties and responsibilities
- Managing Director in a Small Business duties and responsibilities
- Director duties and responsibilities
- Chairperson duties and responsibilities
- Trustee duties and responsibilities
- Treasurer duties and responsibilities
- Risk Manager duties and responsibilities
- Asset Manager duties and responsibilities
- Fund Manager duties and responsibilities
Common Duties Across Management, Governance & Leadership Roles
Job titles differ, but almost every management role in this cluster is built from the same six accountabilities. Recognising them makes it much easier to write a job description or to work out whether a new title is really a promotion.
- People management: allocating work, managing attendance and leave, running performance conversations and handling first-line discipline.
- Operational delivery: planning the work, setting priorities and making sure targets, deadlines and quality standards are met.
- Financial control: working to a budget, approving spend within a delegated limit and explaining variances.
- Reporting: producing accurate figures on output, cost, staffing and risk for the level above.
- Compliance and safety: making sure the team works within company policy, health and safety law and any sector regulation.
- Stakeholder communication: representing the team upward, sideways to other departments and outward to clients or suppliers.
How Duties Change by Seniority and Workplace
The same duty description means different things at different levels, and this is where most CVs and job descriptions go wrong.
Seniority Changes the Decision, Not the Topic
A supervisor and a general manager may both be described as responsible for budgets. The supervisor works within a budget set for them and flags overspend. The general manager sets the budget, defends it and carries the consequence of missing it. When you write duties, name the decision you actually own, not the topic you touch.
Organisation Size Changes the Spread
In a small business, one manager often covers operations, finance, HR and marketing at once. In a large corporate, each of those sits with a specialist and the manager’s duties narrow but deepen. A managing director in a ten-person company and a managing director in a listed group share a title and very little else day to day.
Sector Changes the Compliance Load
A construction site supervisor carries statutory health and safety duties that a retail floor manager does not. A financial manager at an FSP works under conduct rules that do not apply in manufacturing. Always read role duties alongside the regulation that governs your sector.
Popular Role Guides
These are the most searched management and leadership guides currently published on the site.
- Operations Manager duties and responsibilities: the broadest of the departmental roles, covering process, cost, people and delivery across a whole operation.
- Project Manager duties and responsibilities: scope, schedule, budget and risk on defined pieces of work with a start and an end.
- Store Manager duties and responsibilities: retail trading targets, stock, shrinkage, staffing and customer experience in a single outlet.
Duties for CVs
Management CVs fail when they list activities instead of accountability. “Managed a team” tells a recruiter nothing; the size of the team, the budget and the result do. Use the duties for a CV guide for the general method, then borrow role-specific wording from the individual role pages above.
- Led a team of 14 across two shifts, reducing overtime spend by 18% over one financial year.
- Managed a departmental operating budget of R4.2 million, approving spend to a delegated limit of R50 000.
- Chaired monthly health and safety committee meetings and closed out all findings within agreed timeframes.
- Reported weekly on output, staffing and cost variance to the general manager.
Job Description and Employer Guidance
If you are drafting a management job description, be explicit about three things: the number of direct reports, the financial limit the role may approve, and the decisions the role may take without escalation. Vague seniority language is the most common cause of disputes later, particularly when duties are changed or extra responsibilities are added.
Start from the structure set out in the job description duties and responsibilities guide, then pull the role-specific content from the relevant page in this cluster. Duties vary by employer, so treat every list on this site as a well-evidenced starting point rather than a template to copy unchanged.
Related Work Areas
Management roles sit next to several other clusters, and the right guide is often one step sideways.
- Admin and office duties: for the coordination and administrative roles that support a management structure.
- Retail, sales and customer service duties: for store, branch and sales team leadership.
- Job duties: the parent guide covering how duties, responsibilities and job descriptions relate to each other.
How to Use These Duties Guides
Find your title in the directory above and read that role page in full. If your title is not listed, choose the closest role by accountability rather than by name: a “team leader” in one company is a “supervisor” in another. Then take the sections you need, whether that is the daily duties list for an interview, the CV wording for an application, or the full scope for a job description.
Duties always vary by employer, sector and organisation size. Where a role carries statutory or governance obligations, confirm the detail against the relevant legislation or your organisation’s own constitution before relying on it.
